Stage Three: Extra-Curricular Education
To augment the education provided by the Khmer school system, we will provide the children in our care, as well other impoverished children from the local community, with a variety of extra-curricular classes which nurture their talents, provide them with life skills and enhance their employment prospects in later life.
Below are some of the programs we plan to implement once GKG's Eco Village is established. Some of these classes are already being provided for the children at CCT:
English Classes
To augment the Khmer education system’s English language curriculum, we plan to provide extra-curricular English classes. We hope to be able to utilise volunteer native English speakers in this program. The ability to speak fluent English will greatly enhance the children’s employment options in later life.
Computer classes
To train students in office and graphic art programs.
Life skills
Providing the children with practical knowledge in such matters as managing finances, sex education, motorbike/bicycle/car care, health & nutrition and public speaking.
Performing Arts and Art Classes
We will provide a variety of Music, Art and Dance classes according to the children’s talents and interests and the availability of local teachers and visiting volunteers.
Sport
We encourage active participation in a variety of sports and physical education. As with the arts classes, we will be guided by the children’s interests and talents and the availability of tutors.
Equine Therapy Program/Tourist Horse Riding Enterprise
World renowned ‘Horse Whisperer”, Monty Roberts has developed programs working with horses and under-privileged youth in many countries. He has found that by working with horses, children’s self-confidence, responsibility, communication skills, and trust all flourish.
We would like to implement such a program, through which children learn to handle, ride, and care for horses, using the compassionate techniques developed by Monty.
At his invitation, Tara and Sally visited Monty at his ranch in California in 2007 to learn about these programs.
This program could also run a tourist horse-riding business that could offset some of its costs.
Once our Extra-Curricular Education Program is set up, we plan to help children in the broader community.
